Using the Internet |
This course provides a
hands-on look at the Internet and many of its features.
Topics covered include how to get connected to the
Internet through CUNY's direct connection as well as
other alternative Internet service providers, such as
CompuServe, the Pipeline, or Prodigy. You will spend time
actually connected on the Internet sending electronic
mail and will learn how to use mailing lists. You will
subscribe to at least one UseNet Newsgroups and will use
the following features: Telnet, FTP, Gopher, WAIS, and
other search tools. We will access the World Wide Web and
see how hypertext browsers work. Discussions include
Internet security, firewalls, and viruses. The course
covers what you need to set up an Internet interface,
hardware, software, and communication lines. No prior Internet experience is required. |
